Baby showers can be fun! In addition to planning weddings, I love planning milestone celebrations such as birthday parties, bridal showers, retirement receptions and, of course, baby showers. In this two-part series, I’m going to focus on baby shower planning and tell you ways to make it fun.
It is believed that our present day baby showers emerged in the middle and upper class American families in the early 1900s as a way to bestow gifts upon the mother-to-be and her unborn baby. Manners maven, Emily Post coined the term “stork shower” as a ritual to invite only girl and women friends over during the early afternoon to present gifts to the mother-to-be.* Boy, have times changed!
Food, games and color are very important aspects of a baby shower. In today’s society, people not only use the traditional colors of pink and blue but just about any color that can be brought into a theme.
A shower with a theme is a hot trend and often times dictate the color. With the rise of dessert tables, tulle and gender reveal parties, themed baby showers have evolved over the years. The traditional yellow duck and plain balloons have turned into themes such as animal safari, ballerina, mustache, honey bee and a tea party with sundresses and hats.
I recently had a couple of people ask me about diaper cakes. Diaper cakes are still great to use as décor or as a gift for the mother-to be. I had the opportunity to sit down for a “sip and chat’ with my friend Crystal of C. Marie’s Diaper Cakes to discuss her business. She has been designing diaper cakes since 2008.
LHE: How did you get started designing diaper cakes?
CM: When friends and family had babies, I felt there was a need to give diapers as a gift but I didn’t want to put the them in just a bag or basket. After attending craft shows where diaper cakes were being displayed. I always left intrigued. My interest in this particular creative craft continued to grow so I started researching “how-to” articles and found several You Tube videos. The videos were instrumental in helping me to learn the basics of the design. Afterwards, I started putting my own twist on the cakes.
LHE: What do you use for inspiration?
CM: I find my inspiration from magazines, nature and certain display windows while shopping.
LHE: How would someone contact you if they are interested in purchasing a diaper cake?
CM: I can be contacted by email at cmariehill2001 {at} Hotmail {dot} com.
Crystal, thank you for taking the time to chat with me about your business. You are very talented and your diaper cakes are amazing.
Friends, this is the first part in our baby shower series. Have you heard of a Jack and Jill baby shower? Curious as to what it entails and how to get Jack involved? Check back on Tuesday for all the details.
